Access to SDS

All employers must ensure that up-to-date SDSs for all hazardous chemicals are maintained. The OSHA standard states that all people exposed to chemicals have access to these SDSs. This includes contractors, employees, or others who may complete work that places them in direct contact with these chemicals.

State and federal standards permit electronic records, provided a provision is made for access during a power or internet outage. Many companies keep an easily searchable database of these sheets and paper binders in case of an emergency. Some chemical suppliers may offer SDS database access as a part of a chemical contract.

It is important to note that access to these files cannot be restricted for employees. This means they must have access to these sheets without asking for permission or needing approval. They must be available at any time during their work shift. It is mandatory that they be provided in English, but other languages are optional.
