Rectangular Break Sewer Inflow

Rural Water Calculator – Rectangular Break Sewer Inflow

The Rectangular Break Sewer Inflow function is used to help determine the quantity of water inflow and infiltration from a rectangular break in a sewer system where the break is shaped like a rectangle.  A solution can be obtained for the amount of water lost from a leak in a distribution system, and/or the amount of inflow from a leak into a sanitary sewer collection system.

Using the RWC

The user enters the break length and width, and the water depth at the point of the break.  The user can also accept or change the default values for the friction factor and the inflow time in minutes. If the quantity of water loss is known, the formula can also be used to solve for any single one of the other variables.

The formulas used are:

Q = V x A x T x F
V = Bernoulli Equation
Factor = 0.3 proposed, but very variable
Factor = 1 if friction = 0
