Word Online is a stripped-down version of the software that is just a few years old. It opens up in a Web browser, but it contains far fewer formatting and design tools. You can see a much-reduced set of features on the Insert tab in Word Online.
While most of the tools work the same way, you will basically be limited to simple word processing tasks-composing a new document, applying basic formatting, and simple collaboration. In addition, you can only use Word Online when you have Internet access. This means you cannot use Word Online to write the next Great American Novel while riding a bus across the country or camping in the middle of the wilderness. You also cannot use Word Online in a coffee shop, airport lounge, hotel room, or home unless you can connect to the Internet.
