Microbiology of the Anaerobic Digester provides an overview of the bacteria and methanogens involved in methanogenesis. The overview includes hydrolysis, fermentation, acetogenesis and methane-production. Start-up, recovery from inhibition and toxicity, acceptable operational conditions and monitoring requirements are review. Monitoring requirements include not only digester sludge but also digester feed sludge. Attention is placed upon specific monitoring requirements for 1) biogas analysis, 2) ORP, 3) temperature and pH, 4) % VSS, 5) minor and critical nutrients and 6) digester decant. A check list of analytical tests for identifying an unstable anaerobic digester is provided.
